Genuardi's Supports Breast Cancer Research at Fox Chase

Genuardi's

This October when you shop at any of the 36 regional Genuardi's stores, you can help support breast cancer research at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Genuardi's, a division of Safeway, Inc., will be hosting an in-store campaign to help raise funds for research at Fox Chase. Throughout the campaign, customers will have the opportunity to donate money at the register and participate in employee-sponsored activites.

Last October, Genuardi's employees and customers raised $263,000 for breast cancer research, education, and treatment. As one of two recipients, Fox Chase received a check for $131,437 to support the research of Dr. V. Craig Jordan, OBE, PhD, DSc.

Professor V. Craig Jordan, OBE Receives Honorary Fellowship

Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Society of Medicine being presented by the President, Professor Llora, the Baroness Finlay of Llandaff to Professor V. Craig Jordan, OBE, at a ceremony at the Headquarters of the Royal Society of Medicine in London in July, 2008.

As the Vice President and Scientific Director for Medical Science at Fox Chase and the Alfred G. Kudson Jr. Chair in Cancer Research, Dr. Jordan is known as the "father" of tamoxifen, a drug used in the treatment of breast cancer. He was the first scientist to demonstrate tamoxifen's ability to prevent breast cancer in laboratory rats and is one of the top 20 most cited breast cancer researchers of the past decade. Jordan was also instrumental in the development of the estrogen-modulating compound raloxifene, originally approved for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

With a Department of Defense grant for a Breast Cancer Center of Excellence, Jordan's laboratory is working to develop a new treatment model for breast cancer to reverse the eventual development of resistance to anti-estrogen therapy. The goal of the program is to bring new treatments from the laboratory to stage I and II clinical trials, making new breast cancer drugs available sooner.

We hope that everyone in the Fox Chase family will support Genuardi's, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as your contributions help advance Fox Chase's groundbreaking research.
