Fox Chase Cancer Center Adds Astsaturov to Medical Oncology Staff

PHILADELPHIA (August 5, 2008)—Medical oncologist Igor Astsaturov, MD, PhD, of Philadelphia’s Fox Chase section has joined Fox Chase Cancer Center’s medical oncology staff. He specializes in gastrointestinal cancers, including pancreatic, colorectal and neuroendocrine cancers.
Astsaturov has just finished a three-year fellowship in medical oncology at Fox Chase.
“When I completed my fellowship, I chose to stay at Fox Chase as an attending physician for the love of the institutional environment and the great patients I am so privileged to treat,” Astsaturov said. “Fox Chase also offers me an opportunity to work both in the clinic and in the lab, where I am studying cancer biology with the goal of designing better treatment options for patients.
“I am deeply convinced that the best way to help our patients is to push the boundaries by doing clinical and basic research,” he said. He has a number of professional publications to his credit.
Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Astsaturov earned his medical diploma with honors at the I. M. Sechenov Medical Academy in Moscow. After his residency in internal medicine and hematology at the Russian Hematological Research Center, he received his PhD in hematology and oncology there.
Astsaturov then held a postdoctoral research fellowship in immunology at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. He also completed an American internship and residency in internal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, MD, before coming to Fox Chase.
“In my field of gastrointestinal cancers, I am convinced that the treatment choices for each individual cancer patient will soon be defined by the molecular makeup of their cancer cells,” Astsaturov predicted. “This knowledge can help us match the treatment strategies with the biology of individual patient’s tumors.”
