Kia Witherspoon, RN, MSN, ANP-BC

I came to work for the Pain and Palliative Care team at Fox Chase Cancer Center because of the team's reputation as a leader in pain and symptom management and end of life of care for patients with advanced disease.
In 2007, my father underwent a successful stem cell transplant for multiple myeloma. However, it was very difficult to watch my father endure his high-dose chemotherapy treatments. It was during these difficult times that my family and I relied on the guidance of the health care team.
I feel that my personal family experience with cancer gives me a glimpse of what patients and families may experience when undergoing treatment.
As a member of the Pain and Palliative Team my goal is to assist the Fox Chase Cancer Center staff improve patients' quality of life throughout the natural cancer history.
I believe the health care team should treat the "whole" patient, not just the cancer. This holistic approach includes recognizing that cancer not only affects the patient, but the entire family. My philosophy of care is to not only treat the physical but the social, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient and family.
