Mark K Buyyounouski, MD, MS

I am a board-certified radiation oncologist specializing in the treatment of prostate cancer with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and brachytherapy (i.e. implants or seeds). I also specialize in other types of genitourinary cancers such as cancers of the testes and bladder.

I commonly use sophisticated treatment planning and localization techniques, including BAT ultrasound, gold seeds and Calypso®, for prostate localization. In addition, special types of CT and MRI planning often are used to ensure the most precise radiation treatment available for my patients.

I am working to develop new treatment techniques, using IMRT, that help men preserve erectile function following radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Currently, I am a co-primary investigator of this clinical trial at Fox Chase. I am also developing a technique to detect recurrent prostate cancer earlier using MR spectroscopy and repeat prostate biopsy, with funding from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). This will be available as part of a clinical trial. I am a co-author of several research papers and book chapters on prostate cancer, IMRT and testicular cancer.

I am dedicated to the future of radiation research. I serve on national committees of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). I twice received the Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) during my residency at Fox Chase. In 2005, I received ASTRO's Young Investigator Award.
